One of the different elements declared "of real effectiveness" for the athlete – in both anaerobic and aerobic sports – is beta-alanine. The attention given to beta-alanine stems from the results of recent studies in the literature that have shown a positive effect on the performance of athletes. Beta-alanine is taken through certain foods and, in particular, from chicken and turkey meat for example, and the effect of this amino acid on performance is linked to an increase in the concentration of carnosine in skeletal muscle, following its assimilation. Carnosine is a dipeptide (made up of the amino acids beta-alanine and histidine) present for 99% in skeletal muscle where its concentration increases during physical exercise. Studies have shown that direct absorption of carnosine in the muscle is very limited; on the contrary, the absorption of ß-alanine is much more efficient. Over time, assimilation of this amino acid has been shown to be very important for the muscular synthesis of carnosine; this is because the concentration of beta-alanine in the muscle is relatively low, while that of histidine (the other amino acid that is part of the chemical structure of carnosine) is higher. For this reason, beta-alanine is considered the "limiting" amino acid for the synthesis of carnosine. This is why the valuable ergogenic effect of beta-alanine on performance is related to the physiological role of carnosine.
Carnosine is mainly present in the fibres most linked to "strength", type II "white fibres"; this explains why athletes who perform intense and short-term activities like anaerobic sports, such as sprinters, body builders or powerlifters, for example, show much greater concentrations of carnosine than endurance athletes. But it is important not to relegate the properties of beta-alanine to only the side of anaerobic or "power" sports. In muscle fibres, carnosine has its positive effect thanks to intracellular "buffer" capacity (thus maintaining the acid-base balance), which is especially important when performing high-intensity exercises because it reduces exercise-induced acidosis, allowing better performance also in the most prolonged intensive effort; this is why the fame of beta-alanine is related to its ability to reduce the sense of fatigue, also improving the aerobic capacity of athletes. Beta-alanine has its peak of blood concentration 30 to 40 minutes after intake and returns to baseline after approximately 3 hours.
Cordyceps, like all mushrooms, has immunostimulant and anti-oxydating properties, but the peculiar characteristic of this fungus is that of stimulating the cell's energy activity, improving oxygenation, increasing the intracellular energy rate (ATP) and the use of oxygen, decisively stimulating strength and likewise aerobic capacity, promoting a healthy and physiological lung function. Cordyceps is effective in eliminating residual muscle pain faster and is able to improve physiological adaptations to training and performance and reduce recovery time, particularly in very intense and endurance activities, but it also reduces the anaerobic metabolism by ensuring an extra 30% use of oxygen. Scientific studies on the fungus and on cordiopine, the bioactive molecule it contains, show that it is rich in anti-inflammatory substances, which allow the joints, tendons and muscles to reduce inflammation and speed up recovery from traumas of inflamed or bruised tissues.
Withania somnifera – also called "Ashwagandha" or "Indian ginseng" – is a well known plant, long used in Ayurvedic medicine for the most varied pathologies.
