Fenugreek is a plant of the genus 'Trigonella', a term referring to the triangular shape of its seeds and trigonelline, a characteristic component of this plant. This plant was already known in Persia and Ancient Egypt. The cultivation of fenugreek in Europe probably began thanks to Benedictine monks, and it was used in folk medicine to combat intestinal parasites, to alleviate menopausal symptoms and as a hepatoprotector. It has always been appreciated for its restorative, anabolic and anti-ulcer effects.
The active ingredients are contained in the hard, greyish seeds from the fruits, which are air-dried in the open air and subjected to threshing and hulling.Fenugreek is a source of vitamins, in particular it contains vitamin A, vitamin C and B vitamins. It also provides minerals such as calcium and iron. Fenugreek has several properties that have seen it popularised as a dietary supplement.
What is Fenugreek
Fenugreek is a dietary supplement that provides 500 mg of fenugreek per daily dose. Fenugreek can aid natural digestive function and contribute to the metabolism of carbohydrates, triglycerides and cholesterol.
It is in fact prized for its hypolipidaemic and hypoglycaemic action: the hypoglycaemic action is attributable not only to the presence of fibre, but the exact mechanism of action has not yet been clarified. Several studies support its efficacy, which seems to favour insulin secretion and at the same time reduce the activity of enzymes involved in carbohydrate metabolism.
The hypolipidemic properties, on the other hand, derive from the presence of saponins, capable of lowering both triglyceride and LDL and total cholesterol levels. In addition, fenugreek has stimulatory effects on the excretion of bile acids, which in turn facilitate the elimination of excess cholesterol from the body (a property also attributable to the presence of saponins).
