Coenzyme Q10 is Yamamoto Research's supplement based on Coenzyme Q10, a powerful antioxidant molecule involved in energy production at the level of the mitochondria, the body's 'power plants'.

Coenzyme Q10, also known as ubiquinone (or ubiquinol), is a fat-soluble molecule that is indispensable for the proper functioning of the mitochondria, the intracellular organelles that enable our cells to produce energy, and which also possesses a strong antioxidant action, counteracting the formation of free radicals.

Mitochondria play a central role in the process of cellular respiration, through which they produce energy in the form of ATP (adenosine triphosphate). By promoting ATP production in the presence of oxygen, Coenzyme Q10 is essential for maintaining good physical efficiency. This molecule is especially abundant in organs such as the heart, liver, kidneys and pancreas which, being more active, need more energy production.

Studies on Coenzyme Q10 also show that it possesses strong antioxidant properties: it is able to protect cell membranes from oxidative damage, counteract the action of free radicals and thus combat ageing at the cellular level. It is precisely because of this characteristic that it is regarded as a potential skin 'slow-aging' supplement.

Its antioxidant action can boost immune system activity, promote regular cardiac action and heart protection, as well as helping to maintain neurocerebral health, male fertility and counteract the consequences of diabetic conditions.

With age, the concentration of coenzyme Q10 naturally decreases, resulting in a decline in energy efficiency and antioxidant action. This promotes the ageing process, and lower levels of this enzyme are also found in heart disease, diabetes, certain neurodegenerative diseases, and in sportsmen and athletes, particularly endurance sportsmen. Several studies seem to suggest that Coenzyme Q10 improves exercise tolerance in healthy adults and also in subjects with cardio-vascular and respiratory problems: supplementation with Coenzyme Q10 is therefore generally useful in supporting well-being.

Coenzyme Q10 is in fact capable of counteracting oxidative stress, which is formed as a result of the presence of free radicals, highly reactive molecules that bind to other elements and alter their function, and which in the long term can cause tissue damage. From a scientific point of view, the high presence of free radicals leads to premature ageing of tissues. The presence of coenzyme Q10 is therefore very important to prevent the peroxidation of lipid particles (low-density lipoproteins), which are the main cause of the scleroticisation of artery walls, leading to an increased chance of developing heart disease and high blood pressure levels.

The use of coenzyme Q10 is also recommended in sports. Athletes have high levels of free radicals in their bodies due to intense training and it is useful to keep them at bay. Coenzyme Q10 can in fact maintain good physical efficiency, improve exercise tolerance, support muscle recovery and lactic acid disposal, and support cardiac function because it increases the energy of heart cells, reducing oxidative stress.

This supplement is therefore an essential ally against fatigue, ageing and oxidative stress.

Our Advice

Our advice We recommend taking the daily capsule at the same time as one of your main meals: Coenzyme Q10 is absorbed and assimilated when taken with food.

Frequent doubts

What is the difference between Ubichinone and Ubichinol? How come I find these terms associated with Coenzyme Q10? Coenzyme Q10 supplements can present either the oxidised (ubiquinone) or reduced (ubiquinol) form, as both forms appear to be equally potent in increasing circulating levels of total Coenzyme Q10 in the body. The term "Total Coenzyme Q10" refers to the sum of both forms, as Coenzyme Q10 can easily switch from one form to the other as it acts in the body. The names Ubichinone and Ubichinol have been assigned to Coenzyme Q10 because it is a ubiquitous enzyme, i.e. present in all cells.

**Are there any side effects associated with taking Coenzyme Q10? Coenzyme Q10 is well tolerated and does not generally produce any side effects, but be aware that it may reduce the efficacy of certain chemotherapeutic and antihypertensive drugs and warfarin.
