Yamamoto® Research’s Calcium is a dietary supplement containing Calcium and Vitamin D. Calcium is an essential mineral for maintaining normal bone and tooth health, and facilitates energy metabolism. Vitamin D aids normal immune system function and is required to optimise the absorption and utilisation of calcium by the body. Together, Vitamin D and Calcium promote normal muscle function.

Yamamoto® Research’s Calcium is designed to promote the health of bones, teeth and the cardiovascular system, for the proper functioning of the immune system and to facilitate muscle function and psychological balance. Adding vitamin D to the formula stimulates the intestinal absorption of calcium, thereby optimising its utilisation by the body. It is indeed crucial to ensure optimal levels of calcium, because it is the most abundant mineral present in our bodies and accounts for about 1.8% of our total weight. 99% of this calcium is found in bones (98%) and dentine (1%), the substance of which teeth are made, but it is also found, to a lesser extent, in body fluids (1%). Bones do not only contain calcium, they also perform a vital storage function, play a structural role in the musculoskeletal system, and are a primary source of calcium reserves, which are required to maintain physiological plasma concentrations and satisfy certain metabolic needs.

Calcium regulates muscle contraction, is involved in the transmission of nerve impulses and keeps the nervous system healthy. This mineral also normalises blood circulation and controls the heart rate, it keeps blood pressure and cholesterol levels low, and facilitates blood clotting. Calcium is also involved in cell membrane permeability, cell multiplication and differentiation, the synthesis of certain hormones and the activation of certain enzymes. Despite playing a multi-valent role, it is usually associated with bone formation.

Daily calcium requirements vary from individual to individual, depending on age, gender and physiological condition. For adults it is 800 mg, for children (up to 10 years) 400-500 mg, for adolescents 1,000-1,300 mg, for elderly subjects 1,000 mg, and for pregnant and breastfeeding women 1,200-1,500 mg. Calcium is essential, together with the synergistic vitamin D, for the constitution of the skeletal system even in the first months of foetal development, which is why requirements are higher in pregnant and breastfeeding women. Later, once skeletal maturity has peaked (between 20 and 30 years of age), bone calcium density gradually starts to decrease. A lack of calcium during the early years of life usually results in problems associated with bone structure, which presents reduced mineral density, with the risk of bone deformation and rickets. If the right intake of calcium is not achieved through diet, ailments range from simple muscle cramps (including in the abdomen) to tingling fingers, headaches and memory lapses, irritability and nervousness. It can also cause dry skin, brittle nails and hair loss. Calcium deficiency can even result in actual dysfunctions of the osteoarticular system, such as bone pain, brittleness and risk of fractures, tooth decay, bone decalcification in the elderly and osteoporosis in menopausal women. Excess calcium is eliminated through bodily secretions: faeces, urine and sweat.

Frequently asked questions

Can calcium supplements be useful during the menopause?

During the menopause, women have an increased risk of osteoporosis and consequently bone fractures. Calcium intake can help prevent bone loss. Remember that it is crucial to always maintain a balanced diet and a healthy lifestyle, to exercise regularly and not to smoke. Always seek a doctor’s advice.

Can calcium supplements be useful during pregnancy?

Yes: during this delicate phase of life your body needs more calcium to support your baby's growth and development. Supplements like Calcium can be useful for meeting the requirements of this mineral, but we nevertheless recommend consulting your doctor or gynaecologist.

Can calcium supplements interfere with medication?

Although calcium supplements are considered safe, it is important to check with your doctor before taking them, especially if you are taking medication. The body’s absorption of some antibiotics or thyroid drugs is decreased in the presence of calcium.
