Yamamoto® Research Banaba The Banaba (Lagerstroemia speciosa L.) is a tree native to south-east Asia, with flowers varying in colour from pink to lavender purple, belonging to the Lythraceae family, which grows wild in the Philippines, Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand and Taiwan, but is also found widely in Australia and on the Pacific coast. This plant has long been used in traditional medicine where extracts of its leaves are exploited for their hypoglycaemic properties as a remedy for the treatment of obesity, and the first published study on the subject dates back to 1940.

Recently, the popularity of this plant has aroused interest in many researchers precisely because of its properties, and several studies have confirmed its interesting activity on blood glucose regulation. Scientists have identified several components of Banaba capable of exerting positive effects on health, but it is thanks to the corosolic acid contained in the leaves that the scientific community has decided to further investigate the capabilities of the extracts of this plant.

Among the various studies that have revealed its characteristics, one in particular needs special attention: the one published by 'Biosci Biotechnol Biochem'. In this study, a herbal tea prepared with Banaba leaves was shown to inhibit the action of α-amylase (an enzyme that hydrolyses starch to sugar) by up to 38%, while other research suggests that extracts of methanol and water within the leaves of this plant can counteract both the action of α-amylase and α-glucosidase (an enzyme involved in the hydrolysis of maltose to glucose). These two enzymes are both involved in the digestion of carbohydrates and are responsible for the increase in blood glucose levels, which rise particularly after eating foods containing starches and sugars.

What is Banaba?

Banaba is a supplement based on Banaba dry extract titrated at 1% corosolic acid. Yamamoto Research has chosen to use 300mg of Banaba dry extract per capsule, making this product highly functional for controlling carbohydrate metabolism.
Banaba is functional for maintaining normal digestive system function, regularity of intestinal transit and, above all, carbohydrate metabolism: the corosolic acid extracted from the leaves inhibits the action of two enzymes responsible for breaking down more complex carbohydrates into glucose, thus enabling lower blood glucose levels to be maintained. This allows blood sugar levels to be kept under control, especially after mainly carbohydrate meals. Studies have also found, in parallel with the reduction in blood glucose, a decrease in total hepatic lipids, probably due to a reduction in triglyceride accumulation, suggesting a possible rebalancing action on the lipid balance of corosolic acid.

Benefits of our supplement

Why choose Banaba:

  • Participates in maintaining the normal function of the digestive system;
  • Participates in maintaining regularity of intestinal transit;
  • Regulates carbohydrate metabolism;
  • High corosolic acid content.

When and how to take it

We recommend taking 1 capsule a day with water, preferably with or shortly before your main meals.

Use at dosages tested by scientific research ranges from 8 to 48 mg of 1% corosolic acid extract, and at these levels have shown no toxic effects, so Banaba has been defined as a safe plant. However, due to a lack of specific experimentation, it is preferable, as a precautionary measure, not to use it during pregnancy and infancy, and in any case it would be advisable to consult your doctor before beginning any use that involves its exclusive or adjuvant use.
