Aloe (Aloe vera (L.) Burm.f., syn. Aloea barbadensis Mill.) is a plant in the large family of the Aloaceae, shrubby perennials with succulent leaves, native to various regions of Africa, but which have spread to India, islands in the Indian Ocean, and also to the American continent and Oceania.

Aloe vera has been known for thousands of years for its healing and medicinal properties: it is mentioned in the Old Testament, in the Gospels and in very ancient documents that pass on the use of Aloe among the Egyptians, Chinese, Indians and Arab peoples. Great use was also made of this plant by ancient Greek and Roman medicine, which extolled its anti-inflammatory, regenerating, disinfecting and wound-healing properties.

Several species of aloe have nutraceutical properties and one of the best known and most widespread is Aloe vera, also known as 'Barbados aloe', from whose leaves a thick juice and transparent gel with a pungent taste is extracted.

Aloe juice is characterised by a high concentration of natural substances such as mucopolysaccharides, vitamins, mineral salts, amino acids and other elements responsible for its beneficial effects on the organism, the consumption of which can be either oral or topical, being in the latter case very effective on healing wounds and ulcers.

What is Aloe

Aloe is a dietary supplement based on aloe gel, which has an emollient and soothing effect on the digestive system, *supports the body's purifying functions and promotes the well-being of the throat.

Aloe juice is well known for its anti-inflammatory and soothing, immunostimulant, antioxidant and detoxifying properties, and also has antibacterial and antiviral action.

It also has a beneficial action on the stomach and intestine, where it acts as a natural gastroprotectant: it is able to protect the mucous membranes, and in this way reduces certain annoying symptoms such as burning, regurgitation and nausea, which especially afflict those suffering from gastroesophageal reflux. Thanks to the mucilage contained in its juice, it also facilitates digestion. At the intestinal level, it alleviates the effects of inflammatory bowel diseases such as colitis, thanks to the presence of a particular mucopolysaccharide, acemannan, which exerts an anti-inflammatory, healing and soothing action on the mucous membranes.

Aloe juice is truly a panacea for the respiratory tract, and is particularly recommended as a natural remedy for seasonal ailments such as sore throats, colds and coughs, or when convalescing from the flu. Some studies have also shown that aloe juice is able to act against certain types of bacteria, viruses or fungi, preventing urogenital infections including those caused by Escherichia coli and Candida albicans, and performing an antibacterial and antiviral function.

Another well-known characteristic of aloe juice is its purifying activity. This is given to it by the 'mucopolysaccharides' contained in the pulp of its leaves, which effectively help to reduce mucosal contact time and eliminate waste and toxic substances in the body.

It is also important to specify that NOT all Aloe vera supplements have been banned from EU trade: this restriction is only intended for products containing Aloe-emodin, Emodin, preparations derived from the leaves of Aloe species containing hydroxyanthracene derivatives and Dantrone. These molecules are NOT found in the pulp of the leaf, which is the portion used for the production of quality supplements and in cosmetics. The safety of these products is proven, removing any doubts about their use.
