Alpha LIPOIC ACID is the Yamamoto Nutrition supplement containing Alpha Lipoic Acid (ALA), a molecule with a *natural antioxidant action that is found in the body and in certain foods such as spinach, broccoli and brewer's yeast. ALA is considered a potent antioxidant because it is able to neutralise both water-soluble and fat-soluble free radicals and therefore protects cells from various types of damage. One of the main benefits of taking ALA is the improvement it brings in insulin sensitivity and the consequent reduction in blood sugar levels. These properties make it extremely effective in reducing insulin resistance, a risk factor for the development of type 2 diabetes and other metabolic diseases.

Alpha Lipoic Acid is involved in mitochondrial energy metabolism, and is able to provide several health benefits. It can protect cells from oxidative stress, improve insulin sensitivity, prevent neurodegenerative and cardiovascular diseases and reduce inflammation.

ALA can cross the blood-brain barrier and consequently protect the brain from oxidative stress, it can reduce LDL (or 'bad') cholesterol levels and increase HDL ('good') cholesterol levels, thus improving heart and artery health, and it also helps to prevent skin aging. Its antioxidant action can reduce UV-induced skin damage, thereby improving the appearance and texture of the skin and reducing the appearance of wrinkles and signs of ageing.

The positive effect of Alpha Lipoic Acid on the cell membrane has long been known and several studies have reported and corroborated its role in improving insulin sensitivity (a property that is also particularly useful in women suffering from polycystic ovary syndrome - PCOS). It can promote glucose absorption, resulting in greater blood glucose control and thus ensuring the proper functioning of sugar metabolism even in individuals who are diabetic or obese.

This fat-soluble molecule has a particularly potent antioxidant action due to its ability to regenerate other water- and fat-soluble molecules with antioxidant activity, such as reduced glutathione, vitamin C, vitamin E and coenzyme Q10, thereby boosting their effects.

Alpha Lipoic Acid is an objectively useful nutritional factor in the treatment of metabolic anomalies, predisposition for diabetes, insulin resistance and PCOS. Its action is enhanced by the combined intake of other nutritional factors such as inositol, NAC (N-Acetylcysteine) and Omega-3.

Directions and intake
Take 3 capsules a day with water, preferably after meals.
Our Advice

Unlike most fat-soluble compounds, alpha lipoic acid does not require the presence of dietary fat to be properly absorbed, because it can make use of specific transporters.

For this reason it can be taken either on a full or empty stomach, although scientific research has shown good results when taken at main meals. We therefore recommend taking the daily tablet with food.

Frequently asked questions

Is Alpha Lipoic Acid also useful for weight loss?

Given its positive role in blood glucose management, it was thought that ALA could also affect the slimming process.

Although this effect is not a direct consequence of ALA intake, but due to its beneficial impact on the insulin mechanism, lipoic acid can exert a weight-loss-promoting effect.
